“We must stem the erosion of Ireland’s genetic diversity of livestock and support our living heritage.”
– Darren McLoughlin. Archaeologist
Our Mission
Monitoring:
Each year our dedicated staff travel the country collecting genetics from breed societies and individuals in order to monitor numbers and progress of our breeding programs. Using this data we then compile a watch list.
We carefully consider threats to the breeds such as inbreeding and geographical concentration.
Genetic conservation
We sample animals. We have a network of dedicated breeds who take in particular animals if they are identified as being both native and endangered.
We are in the process of developing a genetic bank. With the right support and funding we will collect semen and embryos as a fail safe should a particular breed become extinct.
Promotion
We promote the documenting and breeding of endangered, rare and native breeds. Our network of staff, members and support groups provide a knowledge base for breeder and enthusiasts.
We promote all aspects of Ireland’s living heritage from conservation grazing to Food and traditional Irish crafts.
